MANSABIO

By Fermín Solana.

The good Sebastián Lahera belongs to the caste of the tamed and the wise. Mansabios (wise-tamed). Before he turned 18 when he lived in Montevideo’s promenade - provisionally along with his family – already had a long and bushy beard like an old samaritan with loose pants that smiled more than what he talked. An extraordinary Munchausen smile, those that see and understand (they assimilate the funny twist of what they experience, discarding the surplus).

I’m always asked myself what he saw behind the events. It had to be something pretty Comical. The answer is in his wonder-adventure work, where he shows his own personal fable. These are landscapes as illustrated chronicles of a tender and noble post- Michelin man. Experiences, friends, textures, words (painted with antique lettering brushes) and extremities of a guy happily surprised with his mouth always in the shape of an “o”and classic curves as taken from german fables – the ones my grand-grandmother Omama told me in her wooden home.

That image, a witty but silent heroe, attributable to Herge (if Tintin had closed his mouth at the correct moments), is what Sebastián L. shows in real life, croosing over the province in train from west Buenos Aires with a red old lumberjack shirt, vintage colectible footwear, and his extensible heart with a radar that detects the most adecuate details of real life to archieve them and call them on from his pencil. Investigator, accumulator, but mainly illustrator, with a vocation that requires craft... Becoming an allie with the means, appealing in his case to silkscreen, woodcut, letterpress or any other vehicle that allows him to write his legends.
